The School : GVHSS (G) B.P.Angadi.Tirur.

The school has a very long and past track history as it was started by the British-India Government in the year of 1919 as the “Penpallikkoodam” of those days. The centuries’ old building has still kept intact on the eastern side of the campus and the Archaeological Department of India is planning to take over the building for protection and preservation.

The VHSE section of the school also is one of the oldest vocational institutions started in the year of 1991 and at present there are five batches namely MLT (2 Batches); DMP; LSM; and CPSM and 270 girl students and 27 vocational and non vocational faculty staff

The National Service Scheme unit of the school has proved its vital role in linking the students with the society with a conscience of National Integrity and social service. Although the volunteers of the unit are girls it has been acclaimed and appreciated by their committed community service in their adopted slum like colony called Padinjarattu Laksham Veedu colony near the school. The NSS Unit belongs to the VHSE section of the school complex.

The school has a Higher Secondary section under the Directorate of HSE along with a High School and an Upper Premary under the General Education Department of the Government of Kerala

TIRUR-2

FROM 19th TO 25th DECEMBER 2009

At G.M.U.P.S, KOTTATHARA, B.P.Angadi,

Tirur-2

Submitted by

Shri. Malic Geffoor.K.P. (Programme Officer)

This is the sixth time the NSS unit of GVHSS (G) B.P.Angadi, Tirur, conducting the special camp. The Advisory Council with the presence of the Principal, Academic Head, P.T.A. President, Ward Member and the Programme Officer were met and agreed to undertake three projects for the Special Camp 2009, namely:

1. A socio-economic survey and a health and sanitation work in and around the adopted colony of the NSS unit of the school.

2. The I.K.M. project of data collection for Grama Panchayath of Thalakkad and

3. A survey of unelectrified houses for ANERT and the state government of Kerala.

A meeting of the volunteers was convened the next day where the objectives and importance of such a special camp was discussed. At first only fourteen students were ready for the camp as the camp was decided to be held away from the school. But after a parents’ meeting were called and explained the conditions and necessity of attending the special camp for getting NSS certificate and grace marks more than 56 students gave consent from their parents from among them 50 were selected as campers on the basis of the attendance

At first the camp was decided to conduct at DIET Tirur but as their authority did not give consent to use their kitchen we had to change the camp site from DIET to the G.M.U.P.S. Kottathara, B.P. Angadi.

The volunteers undertook the Socio-Economic & Health survey, in Padinjaratu Nalu centu Laksham veedu colony in ward No.17 of Thalakkad Grama Panchayath which is the Adopted colony of this unit of NSS and a cleaning and sanitation programme in and around all the houses of the colony. It was meant to assess the health related problems of these communities and the possibilities of spreading of diseases either in the form of an outbreak or chances of recurrence of endemic diseases in the locality. Economic status of the people was also taken into account in the survey to determine the socio-economic background of each and every family, which later helped the Panchayath authorities to determine the people who are living below the poverty line. Thalakkad Panchayath is a coastal area where population density is quite high. Many of them are living in tents and sheds with great congestion. Most of the colonies in the area are prone to water borne diseases as there are many Collections of stagnant water around and the people maintain poor social and personal hygiene.

The NSS camp was aimed at conducting a scientific survey to bring about details regarding the socio economic backgrounds of the people in the locality; their health related concerns and put forward measures to control them and to suggest policies for their development and also undertake a health and sanitation campaign work in and around the colony.

The I.K.M. project was also another work undertook by the selected volunteers from the camp. They went to the Panchayath office and collected data by consulting the old records and authorities as well as the Ward Members concerned. Photos of important places and monuments in the Panchayath were also taken and arrangement to make its soft copy was also done with the help of the Programme Officer Survey was conducted on the request of the NSS cell of VHSE Department of Kerala.

On the 18th December itself the programme officer had distributed programme notices to all students, teachers, neighboring families and villagers where they were about to conduct the survey and to the distinguished persons who were to attend the inauguration and the valedictory function of the camp.
